阿爾巴尼亞山區一間餐廳，每天都有不少遊客前去用餐，不過最主要吸引他們的是餐廳的「人氣寵兒」湯米。

湯米 (Tomi) 是一隻原本在山裡快樂長大的野生棕熊，但自從2年前他被老闆抓到以後，就一直被迫生活在狹小的鐵籠裡。

這些遊客經常拿著手機、相機開心找他合照，有時候餵他一些零食、洋芋片，有時候餐廳老闆會讓他喝啤酒解渴。

They take videos of him on their smart-phones, pose for selfies, and if feeling kind give him sweets, cake and crisps. His owner occasionally gives him beer to quench his thirst

Only about 250 brown bears remain at large in the poverty stricken country (in addition to the estimated 80 bears living in cages)

但長期在這個壓迫空間生活、吃不飽，讓湯米終於受不了、崩潰了。

當他聞到食物的時候，他會合起雙掌、擺出祈求的姿勢，求路人給他東西吃；有時候，他真的太餓了，會張嘴咬著鐵籠欄杆，絕望地希望有人可以施捨他食物。

他的「主人」說，湯米會出現這些行為只是因為他很無聊，一點都不認為把他沒日沒夜地關在籠子裡有什麼問題。

但在動物權利專家眼裡，湯米的行為是因為「生活極度單調和封閉的生活條件」，他們看了影片後說，「這隻熊的行為已經非常異常，他真的受不了了。」

這位不願具名的餐廳老闆強調，當初他雇用一名獵人使用麻醉槍才抓到湯米，等同他買下了湯米，他不認為自己有錯，也堅持湯米是店裡的招牌寵物。

但看看湯米的悲慘生活環境，不僅骯髒潮濕，還有滿地的垃圾、零食包裝袋、橡皮圈和他的排泄物。

事實上今年已經5歲的湯米，並非唯一被捕捉的野生棕熊，據調查，阿爾巴尼亞境內一共有330隻野生棕熊，其中有80幾隻被餐廳非法眷養，甚至有些業者會強迫野熊跳舞、表演來娛樂客人。

許多動保團體要求當地政府出面解救這些可憐的動物，但直到現在，政府尚未做出什麼行動。

許多客人都不曉得自己的「觀光」帶給這些野生動物們什麼樣的悲慘下場。

餐廳老闆說，「湯米其實就跟人一樣，只是他不會說話而已，他也很習慣人類了。有一次我忘了給他喝水，他就發出很大的噪音，引起我的注意，後來我發現後就趕緊回去餵他喝水。」

Later, as Tomi became distressed and chewed his limbs and shook his head, the owner said casually: 'Sometimes he gets bored and does this. It's quite usual'

The restaurant owner was unapologetic about Tomi’s plight. 'Once I forgot to leave him water and he made a big noise and I realised something was wrong so I went back to his cage and realised 'oh my god, I forgot his water'

對於湯米做出的異常行為，他也只是淡淡表示，「他只是無聊而已，這很正常。」

動物福利專家表示，「在這個窄小的鐵籠裡，他連最基本的生活條件都沒有，他沒辦法發揮動物的本能，沒有辦法自由移動、尋找食物、攀爬、挖土、洗澡。他無法躲避遊客的騷擾，而且被迫要和遊客互動，才能換取食物。這個環境不只對一隻熊來說難以忍受，我們也真的看不下去。」

Zoologist Thomas Pietsch, of the London-based campaign group FOUR PAWS, said: ‘The bear shows a very strong behavioural disorder which is clear evidence of serious animal welfare deficits. This self-harming behaviour is clearly compulsive and is a result of the extremely monotonous and confined living conditions'

「長期下來，這樣糟糕的生活環境只會讓熊越來越憂鬱、焦躁，最後就導致像影片中那樣出現自殘的行為。」

今年，當地動保團體已經和阿爾巴尼亞政府的環保署開始合作，希望聯手掃除迫害動物的環境，還給他們一個自由正常的生活。

'This situation is unbearable for the bear and totally unacceptable from an animal welfare perspective. Conditions such as these lead to extreme frustration for bears, which results in the strong behavioural disorder shown in the video’

不過大家仍期待當地政府能更有作為，且更確實地執行法律，畢竟早在2013年，阿爾巴尼亞便通過禁止私自持有棕熊，但這個情況似乎沒有改善太多…
