The bonobos used sticks to dig out food hidden under the ground and lever large rocks out of the way, as shown in the sequence of images above. Scientists say their use of tools resembles that of early stone-age technology used by our early human ancestors and may reveal how humans first began using tools

 

研究人员表示，多研究观察倭黑猩猩的行为，将有助于人类学家们解开远古时代的人类「怎么开始使用工具」和「如何发展精进工具技术」的谜底。

而这也意味着，灵长类使用工具的历史可能远比我们原先猜测的500万年前更早！

学者分别对8只来自动物园及7只来自动物收容所的倭黑猩猩们做了一项实验：他们营造了一些需要使用工具解决的情境，例如将食物埋在石头底下，并留下了一些可能可以派上用场的棍子、鹿角及石头供猩猩们使用。

The researchers saw bonobos biting long branches to create spear-like tools that they used to jab at the scientists, who may have been perceived as a threat. The images above show how a female bonobo bit the end of the branches to sharpen the end and then brandished them outside of their enclosure
 
最后共有2只动物园的猩猩和4只收容所的猩猩用了这些工具，而且是很有条理地使用工具来获得食物。

其中一只母猩猩利用牙齿磨利一根木棍，随后她便用木棍戳身旁的观察员。另一只公猩猩甚至将石头磨利来砍树木，但学者也无法肯定这是不是因为他和人类相处的时间较长所致。

This bonobo, called Kanzi, picked up the rock in front of him and used another rock to create sharp shards that he then used as tools. The new research suggests the behaviour may be more common than thought

 

学者实验后表示，虽然这实验无法代表所有不管人工饲育或野生的倭黑猩猩都拥有相同的使用工具能力，但这的确证明了猩猩们是有这样的潜力的！
